A veterinary organization in India recently contacted us regarding a wave of feline toxoplasmosis cases and associated misinformation. Since we are primarily a veterinary cannabis organization, we wanted to address the topic from that viewpoint. Here are our veterinarian Board members’ thoughts on the subject.
CBD cannot replace the standard therapy of toxoplasmosis. We have never seen or heard about its use in this case. But, our veterinarian Board members think it could support the treatment and the cat in different ways. Here are some:
- ● Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Toxoplasmosis can trigger severe inflammatory responses, particularly in the brain (encephalitis), eyes, or muscles. CBD has well-documented anti-inflammatory properties, which may help mitigate tissue damage.
- ● Immune System Support: ECS plays a role in immune regulation. CBD could support the immune system by balancing excessive responses while maintaining the body’s ability to fight Toxoplasma gondii.
- ● Neuroprotective Properties: Since Toxoplasma can affect the central nervous system, leading to neurological symptoms such as ataxia, seizures, or behavioral changes, CBD’s neuroprotective effects may help protect nerve cells and reduce damage
- ● Pain and Discomfort Relief: Cats with Toxoplasmosis may experience muscle pain, headaches, or general discomfort. CBD’s analgesic properties could contribute to improving their well-being.
- ● Anxiety and Stress Reduction: If a cat suffers from stress or restlessness due to the infection, CBD may help by calming anxiety, thereby improving overall comfort.
In summary, while CBD can help as an adjunct, the primary treatment for the disease is imperative since it is zoonotic. The Veterinary Cannabis Society suggests that cat owners and rescuers contact their local veterinarian when symptoms occur.
